  • Trend Report: Suede

    November 11, 2015

Previously described as the decade that style forgot, the 70s have often been overlooked in the fashion stakes. With ideas of the era's style evoking garish images of psychedelic floral prints, the terrifying thought of flares (how could we consider wearing anything but skinny jeans?!) and OTT fringing, 70s style was a thing of, well, the 70s. But fast forward to 2015 and our love for 70s fashion has been rekindled and is refusing to die out anytime soon.

A love affair which began at the SS15 fashion week shows of designers such as Burberry, Chloe and Gucci to name but a few, the spring summer runways were awash with 70s inspired styling. From fringe detailing to flares, billowing boho dresses to bell sleeves and everything in between, the 70s revival trend dominated our spring/summer wardrobes. Proving itself to be more than just a summer romance, our love for the 70s has carried on into AW15 and remains at the forefront of our sartorial thinking with fringing, ponchos, patchwork detailing, and of course suede, storming the catwalks again at the AW15 shows.

This season we've taken a subtle approach to the trend and rather than opting for head to toe 70s style, we're updating our favourite classic pieces for a more contemporary take on the look. The easiest way to channel 70s style this AW15 is by working suede into your wardrobe. Your style staples such as the trusty trench coat, biker jacket and night out heels have all received a 70s inspired suede makeover and make for perfect winter styling.

    Key Pieces

    - The Biker Jacket

    Suede1

    Black Suedette Biker Jacket, £66

    Sand Suedette Fringed Jacket, £45

    Tan Suedette Fringed Jacket, £59

An AW15 style staple, the biker jacket is a go to piece for toughening up dresses or pairing with a classic breton tee and jeans combination. However, as much as we love leather (and we really, really do), this AW15 season has found us coveting leather's softer sister, suede. Whether you stick with a classic biker style or opt for a more 70's esque look with fringe detailing, a suede biker jacket is this seasons answer to the classic leather cover up.

    The Button Down Skirt

    suede2

Tan Suede Button Down Midi Skirt, £39

    Stone Suedette Button Skirt, £32

    Suede Patchwork Midi Skirt, £54

A favourite of the SS15 season, the button down skirt is here to stay for the winter months. Whether you go for mini or midi, give your skirt style a suede makeover with a suedette button down skirt. Pair with a polo neck jumper, over the knee boots and tights for the colder days and swap for a bardot blouse and heels for a glamorous night out look.

    The Shift Dress

    suede3

Black Lace Up Suede Shift Dress, £36

Light Grey Suedette Shift Dress, £45

Tan Suedette Shift Dress With Eyelet Detail, £45

Lace-up detailing, eyelet accents and an autumnal palate of tan, rust, grey and black bring the classic shift dress up to date for winter. A suede textured shift dress makes for perfect AW15 day to night styling, pair yours with over the knee boots and layer sleeveless styles over long sleeve t shirts for winter ready style.

    Accessories

    suede4

    Tan Fringed Heeled Sandals, £24

    Teal Fringe Messenger Bag, £28

Brown Suedette Fringed Ankle Boots, £31

If you're a little daunted by the 70s revival trend, suede accessories are the perfect way to incorporate it into your ensembles. Whether you opt for a pair of fringed heeled sandals as the finishing touch to your night out look, a tasseled handbag or a pair of ankle boots, suede accessories add texture and serious style to any outfit.

Do's and Dont's For Suede Chic

Do mix and match your suede pieces with other boho favourites such as denim, fringing, retro floral prints and bell sleeves to fully embrace the 70s trend. Look to the likes of Alexa Chung, Millie McIntosh and Stevie Nicks (the ultimate queen of 70s style), for inspiration.

Don't shy away from suede! Not sure if the 70s trend is for you? Opt for suede accessories for a subtle nod to the texture trend.

Do clash your suede pieces with different textures. Suede looks great teamed with everything from delicate chiffon blouses to denim pieces and chunky knitwear.

Don't go overboard, make one suede piece the focal point of your outfit to avoid looking like you're in a time warp.

Shop our Suede Trend category for your 70s fashion fix. Whether you choose to don a suede biker jacket, an A-line mini skirt or work the trend into your accessory wardrobe, there's a suede style to suit all.
